With traditional, you have all the normal problems of overproduction, and the distributors and retailers taking their bites of the MSRP, while needing to risk capital up front to print in the first place. Honestly, I think it's a great new business model for periodic release games like Ashes. A quarterly release cycle with relatively small expansions is hardly an aggressive strategy.
They don't stand to make a huge amount of money off this in all likelihood, but they certainly don't want to lose money. Check out some Rodney's Watch it Played video or some of the Team Covenant Youtube videos if you want to get more of an idea of the game. It's a super fun card game that is relatively easy to learn but offers a lot of depth.
Unfortunately, I think the snafus with the release cadence were ultimately what killled the game. This made it easier and cheaper to maintain a complete set and keep up with the release cadence than some other similar format games like Android: Netrunner which released content much more frequently and not in the format of fully-playable decks. You basically get to come out swinging.ħ) The release cadence when it was in production was quarterly (or at least it was intended to be it got kinda screwed by a variety of factors, including the Asmodee acquisition of Plaid Hat). Your dice basically serve as your mana pool, and, while they bring more of an element of luck into the game, there are several mechanisms by which you can mitigate the luck of the dice rolls.Ħ) You get to choose your opening hand which mitigates a lot of the luck of the draw factor. You still need the dice from the base game (and possibly from the two expansions that include dice) but expansionsare complete decks.Ĥ) Dice! Beautiful dice! It's always fun to roll dice. So you get a playable deck with each expansion. You can get a lot of play just out of the pre-made decks, but there's a ton of depth if you want to start crafting your own decks.ģ) each expansion is a fully-playable Phoenixborn. No pay to win options like TCGs have.Ģ) If you just want to play casually, there is a large amount of content in the core box set. I know, very original, but here are some very strong points to the game.ġ) It's a living card game type format so everyone has access to the same card pool. It's a very good two-person (there are also multiplayer-rules) dueling wizard card game.
